this weeks hire car

Hyundai 130 (crd)

you know me, i like a hyundai.

this car was alright if you imagine a slightly cheaper more plasticy golf. the interior looked like a golf, but plasticy, the shape is a bit golf but plasticy and the ride was similar but not quite as rolly as I remember golfs to be. so, basically - a cheap golf - alot of engine noise in there though. Good seats though (real nice on my ass for the 2x3hour trip to head office) and the engine was pretty perky and fast for a diesel.

nearly a 7 out of 10... but a 6 due to plasticiness. 6 out of 10

Well, when in Rome....

My recent acquisition is a 1998 BMW 316SE Estate thingy and I've found it interesting to compare it with the old 1988 Audi Coupe that I've had. I have to say, although the beemer oozes thoughtful touches, rugged construction and exemplary style the Audi still beats it in a few categories. There's a few things in there that are reminiscent of the old legend about the Americans spending millions on a pen that would write in space whereas the Russians used a pencil.

Of course I'm biased because the Audi was the equivalent of my sexy girlfriend whereas the BMW represents a functional wife but take this for example.... in the Audi the clock is right where you can see it, just next to the speedo. I can't see the clock in the BMW because it's well away from the instrument console and blocked by the steering wheel. In the Audi the visibility is awesome. In the BMW the rear view mirror is too low. In the Audi the heating system is simple to operate and intuitive. In the BMW you could quite easily crash trying to hit the right button. In the Audi you can see everything in the rear view mirror at night. In the BMW the auto-dim mirror means you can only see headlights which is a little disconcerting. In the Audi I know exactly where the electric window buttons are. In the BMW I'm still groping around for them after six months of having the car as my finger slides over the various other buttons right next to it e.g. gearbox mode, auto gear lock, hazards - yes let's put those buttons near the electric window buttons.

Audi 9/10

BMW 7/10

P.S. I still own the Audi if anyone wants to rub their genitals against it.

i had a vauxhall insignia 2.0 from work as a hire care this week. truly the most inspid overweight, gutless, pile of shite i've ever driven. terrible car. it had DBA (on which i listened to ed falling leaves on steve lamacqs 6music show). however this was the sole redeeming feature of an otherwise abysmal pile of shite.

They've got a bit of a reputation these days. I remember thinking Vauxhalls were OK as a youth but they seem to get hammered on Top Gear. And then you remember that they sponsor the Vauxhall Conference League thus ensuring that their name is synonymous with low levels of achievement.

Vauxhall did make half decent cars when I was a yoof. Alas, my yoofhood and a decent Vuxhall are now both consigned to the past ..
