theLAB is an ever collective of five visual performers who come from varying backgrounds.
Tony Coleman
The founding member of theLAB has been creating visuals for night-clubs for over twenty years. From humble beginnings with a Commodore Amiga and the programming language AMOS to Jeff Minters Trip-A-Tron, and then through PC software, Tony now VJ's on a dedicated hardware setup. Early days saw the production of VHS cassettes being sold to number of local night-club up, fast forwards to today where he demo's Edirol video hardware. Currently up to his neck in new visual projects including a laser harp controller to eventually completing the interactive VJ DVD magazine. Musically Tony has always been a keen clubber and has moved through most dance genres (gabba, trance, techno, drum n bass) and finally into his current love of breakbeat.
Paul Cole
Paul's entry into the world of VJ'ing came about through his club-land presence as a percussionist. Always inpired by a good visual show he became involved when given the opportunity to actually press buttons on Tony's mixer in a small underground club, when really he shouldn't have been allowed another drink! He soon realised that this hardware approach to VJ'ing allowed for a percussive (approach) rather than computer knowledge. Which made him happy. From this meeting he has grasped how to use P10 visual samplers and V4 mixers with enough dexterity for Tony to leave him at the controls to fly solo at some pretty big gigs!
"I'm still amazed that VJ'ing could have this amount of control so that musical knowledge is an asset to the vj artist as much as being able to have the computer knowledge to create the loops!" So there you go, Paul is now a member of theLAB and is still amazed at moving pictures!
Dave Till
Dave originates from a rock background and still has much love for the sound of crashing cymbals, power riffs, and of course: extremely loud music. (Disclaimer: This Dave is by no means a dark, gothic creature). Down right dirty, I'm talking filthy, breakbeat is therefore his much preferred weapon of choice. Taking to the mixer was a simple enough task for Dave due to his natural ability to both hear and predict the beat. His visual mixing style on the V4 is hard edged and laced with mirroring and motion, and you should expect each of his visual performances to be vibrant, perfectly in sync and full of energy.
David Wood
David was introduced to visuals and VJing whilst sharing a flat many years ago with Tony. An ex linuxhead who has transferred his coding skills and beard upkeep to the Mac platform and processing among other things. Musically David comes from a dark musical background in EBM and goth music (although he didn't shuffle his new rocks quite as much as the other goths) and has remained a non conformist with his visual sets. Rough, choppy and cutting edge, he brings life to drum n bass, dub-step, and is feeling the breakbeat too.
Liam Carlin
The latest addition to the ever growing ranks of VJ's, Liam has been performing live visuals since 2006 in the North of England. With a futuristic feel to his visuals, Liam has always kept in tune with the feel and energy of each event he's played at. Having played alongside Liam at numerous events, we feel lucky to have suh an emerging talent on board and are looking forwards to future events with Basic Productions and Liam.
