A great idea from the Richard Haswell Supporters' Facebook group:

"It's all gone a bit quiet recently on the Richard Haswell side of things. But I'm indebted to a couple of group members for pointing out a cracking opportunity to embarass Leicester City Council big style. If we all nominate Richard to be one of the faces to go on to this wall then LCC may find themselves having to have his name as one of those at the unveiling in April. Nominated. I think it's a legitimate form of protest. One of the few left to us.

can you nominate more than one person? I dont want to give my vote to The Haz when it REALLY should be going to Joseph Merrick.

Depends if their voting system checks for things like that or whether they're going to go through it all by hand when voting closes and fix the result then.

I didn't realise they'd named something 'Orton Square', either. Bit of a giggle, there.

how about voting for the council not to spend money they don't have on something they don't need (the curve, anyone?) which they will then let fall into disrepair (bowstring bridge, anyone?) and will be a joke before it's finished (the curve, anyone?) and instead invest the money into something that needs it, rather than cutting budgets for education, health and services, and raising taxes elsewhere?

just an idea

Voted for Richard.

If he doesnt get on the wall I feel a freedom of information request may have to be requested. I see the council straight away trying to stick this one in the back draw...

I'm surprised Gem, I thought you'd be well behind Curve. I personally think it's a great addition to the city, I've been there a number of times and each time the productions have been superb. I think it's better than the Haymarket and a really excellent addition to the city.

have you been to a performance there? it's the worst customer experience you can possibly imagine. especially for a supposed showcase start of the art theatre.

the haymarket theatre (which itself was nationally reknowned and a not bad technical theatre) went bankrupt because no-one went. So what did the council do? spend hundredds of millions on a theatre, which additionally lost over £60 million in its first year. in the first 3 months it didnt even take enough money to cover the heating bills.

whilst the idea was potentially a great addition to the city, the execution was utterly abysmal.

Yep, I've seen As You Like It, Little Shop of Horrors and am going this weekend again. Ok, so it's a bit clinical and concrete, but have you ever been to the Barbican? That's shocking. I thought both the productions I saw were of West-End quality, and honestly, I'd recommend it to anyone. You can moan about the lack of comfy reception seating or whatever, but ultimately, it's a place where you go to sit in the dark and watch quality theatre. And it does that brilliantly.

I went to the Haymarket a few times, and the creaking seats, odd amphitheatre-style seating and location made it one of my least enjoyed theatre experiences (though I saw a production of 1984 there that was mind-blowing). A theatre is about the performance, and what Curve has done is made people focus on the performance.

haswell remains suspended on a charge of gross misconduct. theres been no news at all to the best of my knowledge.

in the mean time ssw is being run anyhow without him.

in fairness, once you're in and seated its a fantastic showspace. i'm just not sure we really needed an untterly staggering amount of money and a world class architect to create that.

and the customer service is abysmal. the staff dont know what their doing (though i was glad never to be charged for my round of drinks) and as soon as the play is finished, you're virtually kicked out the front door

AND

it's tied to the most rediculous expensive car park in the entire city. it'll cost you a fiver to park for the duration of a 2 hr performance.
