OK, I just gotone of thesefor cheapsies (£26):

My first MXR pedal! Same type asBob Mouldused in Husker Du / Sugar. Any MXR experts care to chip inor let me know ifI got a bargain or a lemon?

It's pretty old, pre-LED, no power jack. a revolting mustard colour, with a very trebly and cutting sound that almost (not quite) degenrates into fuzz at the top of the distortion range. Not a huge volume boost by any means.

I am no expert but all the pre dunlop ones I see go for considerably more than 26 notes.

I wanted a vintage as this is what guy from fugazi uses (alone) from his rick to his JCM .

any idea why I am getting such vastly different characteristics from each pedal though?? the effect was most marked with my BD 2 which is a boiling lava fuzz in line and a bright harsh boost in loop??

i now really want a mxr phase 90 and dyna-comp, bring on the gilmour sound i say!

and that was helpful as merryn rightly said! i wondered about the fx loop and that is gonna help as i seem to get a greatr nasty hum form my loop pedal down the throat and hopefully it; sound better now!

Dirt pedals are really just little preamps. some of them we like to push hard into distortion (fuzz) amnd others less so (overdrives). But they are all designed to work with instrument level signals... and guitars don't put out much level really.

Effects loopscome after your amp's preamp (which has done it's job of boostingthe signal and possibly adding distortion). So the loop is generally operating at a much higherlevel (possibly up to line level, suitablefor inserting plus 4dB rack processors). Dirt pedals really don't like this much signal and when you are putting them in your loop, what you are effectively* doing is using your amp's preamp to overdrive your pedals, rather than the other way round. Add to this the differing impedances of gtr pickups / pedals / FX loops and it can all get horribly horrible.

Mod / echo pedals tend to not to make any radical changes in signal level and modern ones (eg digital delays) tend to behave quite well even in the loop.

*thanks folks, I'll be here all week. Try the lobster.

I particularly like the underpants drawer on the bottom right. Pink Floyd may never tour again, but if they do, then Dave will have clean pants at every date.

I have the EVH Phase 90 and I really like it. It was an impulse buy after I'd tired it in the shop but I did pay in dollars so it was loads cheaper than paying in pounds. I've also tried the EVH Flanger and tha t sounded ace as well!

Does anyone have an old Electro Harmonix Big Muff pedal that they might want to sell? Something like a Rams Head or Triangle version!

On the subject of Fuzz, anyone interested in a Fulltone 70's pedal (which I used in my band for a song, top song in player on our myspace profile)

I can thoroughly recommend the Dynacomp - I spent ages going through various compressors until I tried that one. Best £30 I ever spent. I really like the Blue Box as well, although it needs some sort of volume boost after it. And, I have a '70s Muff (as it were) but I doubt you'd want to straight-swap it for your Fulltone, Dano!

I'm assuming he must actually employ someone to 'play' his pedals whilst hes on stage?!?

Good work fella! I have one on my big board. The feedback is great in a lo-fi way... also capable of weird ring-mod type tones if you try to play other notes through it while you've got the feedback engaged. I wish the feedback would fade instead of shutting off instantly when you loft your foot off... can be remedied by using a delay after it though.

Nice tip about the delay there, red, ta. I was reading on guitar geek or somewhere that it can do ebow-type stuff as well, which will be interesting. Not a bad eBay for 40 quid, methinks.
