Yes, I know I'm supposed to be watching England lose but I've just happened upon something that will kick off a well-worn conversation on here, so it'd be churlish not to stick it up:

Traditional media is haemorrhaging its lead as music discovery platform

It's American, mind. And it's one of those statistical things but if nothing else it should stop all these 'Leicester isn't a gigging city' types - other places aren't gigging either, it would seem.

Well, isn't it more 'people aren't going to gigs to find new music, they go and see what they already know'.

It's any excuse to use the word 'haemorrhaging', really. You'd see it on front pages tomorrow if it wasn't such a long word.

No, 'haemorrhaging' is over stating it.

There's nothing on that weird graph for people who discover new music through friends. Which is how I do a lot of my finding new stuff.

Sometimes without even the use of the internet!

true that - there's no "glyn" option.

I dont think i have EVER heard a song on the radio thats persuaded me to buy an album.

I only go to see my favourite bands like Depeche Mode and Fad Gadget. Sometimes they have good support acts and that is how I discover new bands. Like on Depeche Modes Exciter tour I discovered Fad Gadget so as you can see this method works out very well for me.

Obviously Fad Gadget doesn't exist anymore (Frank Tovey RIP :( ) but I'll always have Depeche Mode! ^__^

I have.

There's nothing on there like "that cover is cool, I bet the music is great." This is also a good way to buy music. Or the method of trawling liner notes looking for connections to new music to try out.

Or "people still buy music? like actually buy it? lolz"

Something looked at him. With its mouth.

It had eaten most of its own eyes.

I have too, but it was usually the Bruce Dickinson Tuesday rock show, or these days, 6Music.

Though I never bought teh Fatima mansions EP but i should have done.

sorry all!

A sizeable amount of my youthful music collection is thanks to Tommy Vance and John Peel. 6Music does a fine job currently; Marc Riley, Craig Charles, Gideon Coe & Jarvis.

Ah, the days of Atomic Label's footnotes.
