Yeah - it takes my topspot, I know that JD was the genre game changer and alot of people YFM as a bit of a let down, but to me its such a dank, bleak and brutal record... it almost sounds like they recorded it, locked in a dark cold cell... theres probably more killer tracks on other records (no heroes especially is real accesible) - but as a "peice of work" this one hangs together as the bleakest and most sexy.

a leap forward from their blankets ep (which i really enjoyed)... sickeningly talented 21 year old kids making punked up / metal / hardcore / heavy post hardcore. kind of a few little bits where their immaturity and scenester stature show through - but this is a fucking great EP all said... a band to watch for the future.

Abscess - Seminal Vampires and Maggot Men

A complete dirty protest of an album. Off the hook dirty grinding hardcore punk, downtuned to hell with a liberal dose of death metal - semi retarded / genius savant lyrics (featuring such incredible prose as "WORM FUCKING STY IN FUCKING FEC FUCKING TION" from the track "worm sty infection" and song titles like "i dont give a fuck" and "freak fuck fest: orgy of the gaffed"), lame but rapid riffery, wonky solos and wildy uneven production. Absolute perfection.

Abscess - Horrorhammer

couple of throwaway oldschool death metal tracks on here, but other than that another rocking / horrible, messy grinding take on Poison Idea / Black Flag punk. The songs are less whacky, the production more polished (but trust me, this still sounds like shit in comparisson to Distant Guns) but this is overall a another stormer. hardcore tuned so low only dogs can hear it, drunk as fuck (DAF) solos, chris reifert's unusual take on "singing", teenage lyrics about hate and damnation... its ALL here.

Abscess - dawn of inhumanity

errr... jury's out on this one. Standard primitive death metal with grind / crust elements contains elements of subtlety, atmospher, melody... technical prowess... lyrical restraint... even a production that doesnt siound like shit. this would probably have been 100% incredible as an album 20 years ago... but without the whacked out poison idea riffery and sicko / savant lyrics it kinda lacks alot of appeal. too sensible by far.

Trap Them - darker handicraft

slamming metallic hardcore recorded to sound like entombed / carnage / dismember (Boss HM2 pedal maxed out apparently) by the guitar guy out of Converge. so basically this covers almost all the bases for a guy like me (awesome). Little bit one dimensional, but has some jaw dropping, pant filling moments of riffery that could literally make you start a punch up with a train.

Listened to.... Baroness - Yellow/Green. Was really really looking forward to hearing this, so I listened to the Yellow part 1st off. Hmmm. Tried very hard to keep an open mind with this - I knew it was going to be a lot more melodic and accessible than previous stuff, but in keeping with my traditionally more mellow summer listening habits this shouldn't be a problem. Found myself enjoying the 1st couple of tracks, digging the multitude of different styles and sounds they had going on - ooh thats a nice bit of acoustic guitar, mmm I like the way this ones starts all backwards etc, about 7 tracks it struck me I wasnt enjoying it at all - and to my ears it sounded like any number of other middle of the road mainstream rock bands (90s Metallica being a specific point of reference). It has a track which sounds suspiciously like Therapy? for fucks sake. I can't kid myself - I hated it - it sucked. It has no balls, awful lyrics, and I have no desire to listen to it again. Unless the Green portion of the album sees them suddenly embrace grindcore I'm considering this band a write-off. 5 on 10

Then, to ease my troubled lugholes -

Despise You - and on and on split w/ Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Totally awesome hardcore/powerviolence/grind with male/female vocals, fully gnarly fucked up guitars and a somewhat antisocial attitude. Basically made my afternoon - Circle-Pit Syston in full effect 10 on 10

Kerouac - Heavy Hearted

For me, Kerouac were the most exciting band to come out of hardcore in ages and ages... and then after 2 splits and an album they called it quits. This is the complete recordings release... including the mega material from the split with Long Haul and their highly acclaimed COLD DISTANT... album. Discordant, heavy hardcore, baritone guitars, emotive vocals and metal / tough guy riffing and off the wall dynamics. A couple of poorly recorded demos and some remixes fill out the package. Incredi-band!
