I fucking love Electro Hippies / Dr and The Crippens / Generic etc... and i reckon alot of modern hip bands on holy roar etc owe that scene a huge debt.

you've got a point - but check out Chariots "the inner life" / Phoenix Bodies "raise the bullshit flag" / Black Mass / Throats and the first Maths ep... these bands are fucking great and stir the loins of this particularly grumpy old man.

LHP is one of my favourite albums. i remember the first timer I heard THAT sunlight studio sound... thomas skogsberg or whatever. completely incredible. totally ripping and the perfect antidote to the whole morrisound sterile scooped fizzing sound all the other bands went for.

The Fading Captain Series boxset - basically a round up of the best of Robert Pollard post GBV. It's got more gems in it than Naomi Campbell's knickers!

Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier

Any good?

Allow me to elaborate...

The Final Frontier - review
1. Satellite 15…The Final Frontier
Satellite 15 is a ferocious opener with the bass doing really un-Maiden things and devastating drumming before going into the title track which is more familiar territory for modern Maiden and actually works nicely next to Satellite 15 and has a damn fine first solo in the middle by Adrian.
2. El Dorado
Oddly, after The Final Frontier’s big finish, this starts with a big opening which sounds a bit odd but there you go. Great track though, another Smith classic mid-tempo monster with a great bridge and chorus. Interesting lyrics by Bruce, which seem to allude to the world financial crisis.
3. Mother of Mercy
Another Maiden war song but a really good one. Great vocals and strong lyrics covering familiar ground to the songs on A Matter of Life and Death.
4. Coming Home
A nice Maiden ballad. Bruce sounds really clear on this album and not like he’s fighting a losing battle against the triple axe attack. Nice solos from Davey and Adrian. The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory I guess, the life of a pilot and also could be a bit about the Somewhere Back in Time Tour. Wonder who wrote those!
5. The Alchemist
The first fast track and it’s pretty decent and gives a nice bit of variation to the pace of the album. Probably a grower as it’s got some nice guitar harmonies and a great Janick solo.
6. Isle of Avalon
Wonderful guitar sound to start off the first of the epics. Interesting melodic territory for Maiden on this one as it builds up nicely into quite a monster. Great Adrian solo four minutes in. Some parts remind me of the cool melodies on Sea of Madness. A really strong track this one.
7. Starblind
Great rhythm to this track. Nice to hear ‘Arry going for subtlety on his Bontempi organ these days to provide little lush patches of background. This is another really strong song and a real tour-de-force by Nicko.
8. The Talisman
This one starts off exactly like The Legacy but then launches into something a lot faster than that awesome classic from the last album. It perhaps sounds a bit too much like some tracks from A Matter of Life and Death in places but if you take this album on it’s own then it fits in really well and is a good strong track.
9. The Man Who Would Be King
The start of this one reminds me of The Loneliness of The Long Distance Runner, some of the guitar sounds on this album really echo Somewhere in Time quite strongly, but then it launches into standard Maiden territory before going into a wonderfully uplifting instrumental middle section which is just gorgeous. What could have been an averagely strong track is taken somewhere really special by that middle part.
10. When The Wind Blows
This starts off with a wonderfully catchy Maiden melody which echoes in the second more powerful part of the song. The instrumental middle section is great followed by the mighty chugging last part before the quiet finish that disappears into wind noise. It’s a really classic Maiden epic with no wasted time that feels a lot shorter than it is.

I think this album is the strongest one the re-united Maiden have done. I really like Dance of Death in particular but overall The Final Frontier is such a strong collection of great songs that it’s hard to beat.

PJ Harvey - Rid of Me

My favourite ever production on an album - it sounds freakin awesome still.

It's very good, but I prefer To Bring You My Love, which takes that early PJ Harvey sound to its greatest height. Long Snake Moan may be my favourite song by anyone ever...

I also nabbed this over the weekend. I would dexribe it as probably 50% meh... but the last two tracks really grew on me this morning so... probably end up and only a 25% meh by next week - so its prob better than Brave New World, less patchy than dance of death but not as good as matter of life and death.
