For a little more than £250, seriously consider a Garrison. There's not many about... the company has been taken over by Gibson to make their 'Songmaker' series acoustics - which start at a grand! That should tell you something about the quality of Garrisons. This is the budget Garrison electro:

http://www.rosemorris.com/brands/Garrison/AGGC_200_CE.html

I've had a Garrison G30-CE for about 6 years... which is saying something, as I change guitars more often than most people change their socks! Most of the time, it seems to get used for recording in preference to a Taylor 415 Jumbo. Try to find a used G20 / G25 / G30, they are very durable and if you're lucky it might just be in your budget, like this one:

Also, for the money a Yamaha is always a good choice.

does it need to be new? I might have a tanglewood I can let go for a lot less than that...

If new, my yamaha is awesome, that was about that much I think...

I had a Simon and Patrick that was alright. My Crafter is very good for the money and I'd buy another one if I needed another £100 guitar. I found it very difficult to find a guitar that actually sounded like I wanted it to, until I started looking at stuff with 4 figure price tags
